Gerjan is a familiar face to the residents of Dronten, Biddinghuizen and Swifterbant. He drives a different route almost every day: from new housing developments, old core to outlying areas and from north to south.
'I once started as an international driver, but made the switch three years ago to employee collection and driver in Dronten. The polder landscape feels familiar.'
'Separating waste is important to me. It's good for the environment and ultimately it benefits the resident. If there is a lot of residual waste in the PBD, for example, the large containers are rejected. Instead of getting money for our waste, we then have to pay for it. Not fun, and not necessary! Proper separation keeps costs down.'
'There are still people who think we end up dumping the waste in one big pile anyway. Not true! PBD, organic waste and paper each have their own depot, where recycling can begin. Residual waste cannot be recycled. It is incinerated. So that's why we want as little residual waste as possible.'
