'Separating waste is fun and not difficult'

Michel made the switch from steel construction to the world of waste collection after 27 years. He has been driving the garbage truck for a few months now and now knows the streets in Dronten, Biddinghuizen and Swifterbant well. 'I like separating waste and it is nice that I can now do my bit as a waste collection employee.'

'My work is very diverse. I like to do all kinds of things and fortunately I can. For example, I also ride on the crane truck (which we use to empty the underground containers), I've already been on the sweeping truck once and replaced the regular driver of the crane press when he had to go to the dentist.'

Admittedly, the first two weeks behind the wheel "was of course a bit of a sweat. Michel: 'Some streets are quite narrow, of course, but the garbage trucks are made for it. You can make shorter turns than with the average big truck.' Personally, he finds waste separation fun and important. 'It's a matter of good thinking and getting used to it.'

'Separating paper is generally going very well. Still, there are instinkers. If you have a pizza delivered, the box should not go in the paper bin after use because of the grease residue. "Then put that on the box," I regularly hear from residents. And I actually like that idea. So here's an appeal to pizzeria delivery services," he laughs.

Tips from our staff collection

Tip from Edwin

'Cut or tear large cardboard boxes into pieces before throwing them in the paper bin. Put cardboard neatly upright. If you don't make a box flat, it blocks the entrance to the container, so you can dispose of less.'

Tip from Bjorn

'My tip against waste is simple: eat your plate well, haha! That's a joke, of course, but there's something to it: buy only what you use. Freeze leftovers, or bring a plate of food to an elderly or sick neighbor.'

Tip from Renate

'I often carry extra PBD bags. Just in case someone would like to try them and doesn't already have them. Should you run into me on my rounds, feel free to ask me for a container bag, advice or tips for separating your waste. You'll find that if you separate your trash better, you're less likely to have an overflowing container.'

Tip from Gerjan

'Sometimes it is difficult to decide which bin to choose. When in doubt, you can use the Waste Sorting Guide-app consult or this website. Je can also create your own garbage man or -wife for advice!

Tip from Henk

'PBD is mainly about household packaging material. So the plastic of meat products, the bread bag and the plastic packaging of vegetables.'

Tip from Jelle

'Buy a trash can with three or four different compartments. For food waste (VGF), plastic, can and drink containers (PBD), residual waste and paper.'
